Body Mass Index

Your body mass index is a calculation of your body height and weight. It normally ranges between 18.5 and 25. Being a healthy weight before you get pregnant may help you avoid any health problems with you and your baby. Ideally your body mass index should be below 25 if you are trying to conceive and if it is above 30 you could be facing serious health risks without pregnancy.

Women being underweight before they get pregnant are linked to having babies with low birth rates. Overweight women are more likely to have numerous implications in relation to fertility and pregnancy problems such as:

  • Your chances of getting pregnant are seriously reduced.
  • You have increased risk of miscarriage and fetal malformations.
  • You have increased risk of developing diabetes during pregnancy, which can also effect your baby.
