The pill is a tablet containing two female hormones (oestrogen and progestogen).

How it Works

Hormones stop a woman ovulating (releasing an egg each month). There are many different brands of pill with different combinations of hormones. Your GP will advise you on the correct hormone combination that suits you.

  • Does not interrupt sex
  • Useful for women who can reliably take pills on a daily basis
  • Often reduces bleeding, period pain and PMT (Pre-Menstrual Tension)
  • Can protect against cancer of the ovaries and womb

  • Vomiting, diarrhoea, antibiotics and some other prescribed drugs can interfere with its effectiveness. In all instances another method of contraception would have to be used.
  • Not suitable for women with conditions such as high blood pressure, smokers over 35 or women who are breastfeeding. Your GP will advise you on the correct contraceptive for you
  • Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections
  • Not available without a prescription

Intrauterine devices are a very good method of contraception but it is very important that you choose the right one and you that take every step to ensure that the insertion is done safely. For this reason we ask patients to attend the clinic for one visit prior to the insertion.

During this consultation we discuss the different types of coils and we  decide if additional tests are required prior to the insertion. For example in younger patients it is a good idea to exclude the presence of infection as undetected infections can cause fertility problems in the future.

The appointment for the insertion is made in the first week of your cycle (which is the first seven days after the beginning of your period). It doesn’t matter if the actual bleeding is present or not. You will need insert the two tablets that you were prescribed at the consultation into the vagina 4 hours before your appointment

It is also a good idea to take a pain killer an hour before.

If you are having a coil change (one coil removed and one inserted) it is essential that you do not have unprotected sexual intercourse for at least a week before your insertion.

If any of these rules are unclear for you please speak to us for clarification.

Coil Consultation – €50  (plus €20 for swabs if required)  This is appointment is compulsory if you have never had a coil before or had a coil but not fitted at this clinic.

Mirena Coil Insertion- €200

Copper Coil Insertion – €250 (including the coil itself)

*Both coil insertions require a follow up visit which is included in the initial price (€200/€250) this will include an ultrasound to check coil positioning.

COST €80

Mirena coil can be removed at any time of the cycle but it is very important that if you are not trying to get pregnant, you avoid unprotected sex (using a condom is ok) for seven days prior to the removal. This is to avoid the risk of pregnancy.

Copper coil is removed in the first week of your menstrual cycle.

For a coil to be removed easily it is essential that the string attached to the coil are visible at speculum examination. If that is not the case you will need to have an ultrasound to ensure that the coil is still in the correct position in the uterus. The ultrasound will be done at the same appointment and the total cost for the appointment will still be 80.

You then will need a more complicated procedure to have the coil removed which is done under ultrasound guidance by a trained Gynaecologist. This will need to be booked on a different day  and it is a an outpatient procedure. You will be able to drive home after.

Cost of complicated coil removal is €200.

Implanon consultation – €50

Implanon insertion – €100

Implanon removal – €150

Small flexible rod which is placed just under the skin on the inside of the upper arm. It can be felt under the skin but not seen.

How it Works

The rod slowly releases the female hormone progestogen, which stops ovulation (an egg being released). It also thickens the mucus at the neck of the womb making it difficult for sperm to enter, and thins the lining of the womb.

  • Does not interrupt sex.
  • Works for up to three years.
  • May reduce painful periods.

  • May cause irregular bleeding, no bleeding at all, acne or weight gain.
  • Insertion and removal must be done by a specially trained doctor.
  • Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

There are two methods of emergency contraception:

Morning after pill

It can be taken up to 72 hours from the episode of unprotected sex.

Are there side effects?
  • Some women may feel sick after taking emergency contraception but vomiting is extremely rare. If you vomit within 3 hours of taking the tablet you should consult your doctor, as the dose may need to be repeated.
  • The tablet can also alter your menstrual cycle. You may have some irregular bleeding after taking emergency contraception. This is not harmful.
  • Your next period may arrive a little early or a little late. If your period is more than 10 days late, you should consult your doctor because of the risk that you might be pregnant. If emergency contraception fails and you find yourself pregnant, there is no proof that it causes any harm to the developing baby.

Insertion of an IUD

It can be inserted up to 5 days from the episode of unprotected sex. If you are too late for the morning after pill you can discuss the insertion of an IUD with us. It is the most reliable method of emergency contraception.
