The Coil

THE COIL INSERTION

Intrauterine devices are a very good method of contraception but it is very important that you choose the right one and you that take every step to ensure that the insertion is done safely. For this reason we ask patients to attend the clinic for one visit prior to the insertion.

During this consultation we discuss the different types of coils and we decide if additional tests are required prior to the insertion. For example in younger patients it is a good idea to exclude the presence of infection as undetected infections can cause fertility problems in the future.

INSERTION:

The appointment for the insertion is made in the first week of your cycle (which is the first seven days after the beginning of your period). It doesn’t matter if the actual bleeding is present or not.

It is a good idea to take your usual over the counter pain relief an hour before insertion, as if preparing for a painful period, cramping will subside, but may linger for the day.

If you are having a coil change (one coil removed and one inserted) it is essential that you do not have unprotected sexual intercourse for at least a week before your insertion.

If any of these rules are unclear for you please speak to us for clarification.

COSTS:

Coil Consultation – €50 (plus €20 for swabs if required) This appointment is compulsory for all coil insertions and reinsertions at this clinic, even if you have been here before.

Mirena Coil Insertion- €200

Copper Coil Insertion – €250 (including the coil itself)

*Both coil insertions require a follow up visit which is included in the initial price (€200/€250) this will include an ultrasound at 6 weeks to check coil positioning.

COIL REMOVAL

COST €80

Mirena coil can be removed at any time of the cycle but it is very important that if you are not trying to get pregnant, you avoid unprotected sex (using a condom is ok) for seven days prior to the removal. This is to avoid the risk of pregnancy.

Copper coil is removed in the first week of your menstrual cycle.

For a coil to be removed easily it is essential that the string attached to the coil are visible at speculum examination.  This is €80 and can be done by the nurse during your menstruation cycle.

If the strings are not visible  you will need to have an ultrasound to ensure that the coil is still in the correct position in the uterus. The coil is removed by a gynaecologist using the ultrasound guidance and the total cost for the appointment will be €200.  This will need to be booked on a different day and it is a an outpatient procedure. You will be able to drive home after.

Cost of complicated coil removal is €200.

Coil FAQ's

Women's Health Clinic, Dublin, Ireland.
No, you still need to have a consultation with our midwife. Our protocol is very specific and we cannot perform an invasive procedure on a patient that we have never seen. I have my coil from my GP, can I just book in my fitting?

Yes. We have specific timing instructions above on timing for coil removal.

All these instructions will be discussed at your coil consultation. That is another reason why you need a consultation.
